THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JUNE 5. Awareness programmes, seminars, exhibitions, essay writing and painting competitions, planting of saplings and testing the emission level of automobiles marked the observance of World Environment Day in the capital today. Over 500 saplings of shady, ornamental and fruit-bearing trees were planted by the personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) all round the sprawling the Pallipuram campus near here to mark the day. The Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment in association with the Kerala State Pollution Control Board observed the day with the focal theme "Urban Air Pollution". Free emission tests for petrol-engined vehicles was organised at the Jawahar Balabhavan as part of the function. The Nehru Yuva Kendra, Friends of Trees and the Forest Department also organised functions to mark the day.
