BANGALORE, JUNE 5. While adults may not lament much about the harm being caused to the environment through pollution, it is very often the youngsters who compel you to ponder. That is what the children who participated in the Newspaper in Education (NIE) programme on `Environment Awareness' organised by The Hindu on Saturday did. This year the theme for Environment Day, which is observed on June 5, was "Wanted! Seas and Oceans - Dead or Alive." About 300 children from nine city schools made a colourful display with placards and slogans, urging people not to pollute water bodies by dumping sewage and contaminants into them, not to cut trees and to keep the environment clean. Some of the slogans read: "As long as there is tree, oxygen is free"; "Earth is a treasure beyond measure" and the like. Seventeen students spoke about the threat to environment and what one could do for conservation and rejuvenation of forests and water bodies. Priyadarshanan, Entemologist, who is part of the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and Environment, made a presentation on the life of insects and revealed some interesting facts about these organisms. He said that in Nagarhole, there were about 105 species of ants alone. K. Srikanth, General Manager (Finance), Toyota Kirloskar Motors, gave away the prizes to students who excelled in the essay writing and those with the best placards. The prizes were sponsored by Toyota Kirloskar Motors. Geeta Ramanujam, Principal, National College (PU), Jayanagar, and N. Rajshekhar, Regional Manager, The Hindu , Bangalore were present on the occasion. The winners of the Essay competition on the theme of environment are: Arjun Rao of Florence Public School, R.T.Nagar; E. Kishan Balaji, Deva Matha Central school; Pragathi Praveena of Oxford Senior Secondary School (CBSE); Ramya N. Badani, ASC Kendriya Vidyalaya and K. Sirish, National Public School, Koramangala.
