"NGOs' help vital in checking eco-degradation"

HYDERABAD, JUNE 5. Effective implementation of laws to check environmental degradation was not easy without pressure building up from non-governmental organisations. "Unfortunately we function as a reaction to something. It is your job to be proactive," T. Chatterjee, Principal Secretary, Environment and Forest, told the NGOs. He was speaking at the 4th formation day celebrations of the Forum for a Better Hyderabad here on the occasion of the World Environmental Day on Saturday.

Mr. Chatterjee said the Government was doing its best to implement the environmental laws. It was issuing notices and prosecuting the polluting units and yet the violations went unchecked. The Forum was doing a wonderful job but it was in minority.
