Mufti visits aromatic plant farm

SRINAGAR, JUNE 6. To promote cultivation of aromatic and herbal plants in Kashmir, the Regional Research Laboratory (RRL) will involve local farmers for growing the flora.

A two-pronged strategy will be adopted to attract the farming community to take up cultivation with plant material and technical advice provided by the Laboratory.

The strategy was decided during a visit of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to the RRL farm here last evening. Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research, RRL, Dr Ghulam Nabi Qazi and senior scientists from New Delhi were present.

The RRL, will involve local farmers around the farm, spread over an area of 1800 kanals, conduct extension activities and hold farmers workshops for their benefit. On another level interested people will be involved who can invest in processing and marketing of the plants.

The buy back arrangement and contract farming were also discussed. Some individuals have shown interest in the endeavour.

Possibilities of a government agency like the agro-industry entering into multilateral arrangements among farmers, RRL and prospective buyers were also discussed so that the farmer develops interest in the business. A kilogram of rose oil extracted from the local variety of rose sells for about Rs 3 lakhs.

The Chief Minister evinced interest in the farm and inquired about various plants. He saw the extraction facilities available at the farm and interacted with scientists about medicinal value and marketability of different plant species.

He discussed measures to further develop facilities at the farm and said he would take up the matter with the concerned Union minister, Kapil Sibal.
