CHENNAI, JUNE 6. Television screens to serve as electronic display units for announcing the arrival and departure timings of Metropolitan Transport Corporation buses are being installed at 10 prominent terminals in the city. The Transport Corporation has awarded the project to a private company on a build-own-operate basis. The company will install the televisions and connect them to a computer at the terminal, which in turn gets information about the timings through a dedicated web site. The system will be in operation at the bus terminals in Saidapet, T. Nagar, Velachery, Thiruvanmiyur, Vadapalani, Toll Gate, Mint, Perambur, Ayanavaram and Anna Nagar West. "We have already set up televisions and accompanying units in many of the designated locations," said T.V. Venkatasubramanyan of Sakshi Automation Solutions, the BOO licencee company. One of the main advantages for the commuters, he pointed out, would be announcements about rescheduling of the services, including those due to breakdown of buses en route. Apart from giving details of the timings on big screen televisions, the company is permitted to solicit and telecast private advertisements. Noting that a minimum of 10 and maximum of 12 televisions are allowed at each of the terminals under the agreement, he said "the company also plans to run scrolls about latest news and those on socially relevant themes such as AIDS awareness and measures to avoid tuberculosis." On an average, the electronic display units will provide information about 200 bus trips at each terminal. The company, which plans to offer the service to all transport corporations in the State, has been awarded the contract for three years. Apart from insuring the equipment, the company has appointed security personnel to man them round the clock.
