Apparel park at Kalamassery to open on August 17

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, JUNE 6 . The apparel park for women at Kalamassery, promoted by the Industries Department, will open on August 17.

The Director, Industries and Commerce, P.H. Kurian, said that branded products from the park would hit the market by Onam. He said that the export-oriented park would also cater to domestic markets. The park aims at imparting modern technical expertise in design and cutting to women entrepreneurs. It would provide employment to 500 people, he said. "There would be a marketing outlet in the city for the garments, which will be known under a common brand name," Mr. Kurian explained.

A common-facility centre too would be set up, apart from a bank for raw materials. The entrepreneurs will get help in getting bank loans and in marketing the produce. A public-limited company called Women Apparel Park has been set up. Those from outside the park too could avail of the facility, for a nominal fee. "We will give Rs 65 lakhs as grant, apart from an acre of land. A building with 13,000 square feet area has been given to the park in the Kalamassery industrial estate," Mr. Kurian added.

The Managing Director of the park is Bindu Vipin. "Many banks have come forward to support the initiative. The advantage is that there is facility to purchase raw materials, create new designs and impart training, all under one roof. This is as part of the cluster-development programme of the department," Mr. Kurian elaborated.

According to Usha Umesh, one of the office-bearers of the Women's Association, there is a huge market for garments in the State. The only problem is in marketing the produce, she said.
