Kothamangalam municipality to construct 20,000 rain pits

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, JUNE 6. The Kothamangalam Municipality will construct 20,000 rainwater pits this year as part of the water management programme drawn up by the State Government.

The Kothamangalam municipal chairman, V.V. Kurien, inaugurated the programme at Kothamangalam U.P. School on Saturday. Mr. Kurien said that the rain pits would be constructed with the help of various non-governmental organisations (NGOs). He also plans to seek the cooperation of Kudumbasree units, Saksharatha Mission and schools to implement the programme.

The programme is part of the State Government's scheme to construct two-crore rainwater pits in the State for improving the water storage capacity of the soil. The Kerala Institute of Local Administration (KILA), Mulamkunnathukavu, will provide technical assistance. No financial assistance would be given for implementing the programme.

Mr. Kurien said that rainwater harvesting schemes would be launched in all Government offices this year as part of the new water management scheme.

The Kothamangalam Municipality will provide financial assistance for the construction of houses to people belonging to the below poverty line (BPL) category. This comes under a scheme for providing houses for every resident in the municipality. Financial assistance of Rs. 40,000 each would be given for 350 houses as part of the first stage of the programme. It is being implemented with the support of the State Government as well as part of the Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojana (VAMBAY) scheme.

The Municipality also has plans for a Municipal Office building at an estimated cost of Rs. 1 crore, as well as for building a Municipal Town Hall, said Mr. Kurien.
