BANGALORE, JUNE 7. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, today asked senior officials to look into the progress of development works and directed that they be expedited. Mr. Singh, who summoned the Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, K. Jairaj, assigned the job of studying the 11 important infrastructure projects that are under various stages of completion, to him and directed that the works be speeded up. Among the tasks that have been given to Mr. Jairaj are the Bangalore international airport project, works at the international convention centre in Bangalore, construction of food parks, highway projects, railway projects (K-Ride), and the Bangalore-Mysore highway project. Mr. Jairaj said work on the international airport project was in the final stages and the nod of the Union Government on two issues was awaited. They pertained to the closure of the HAL Airport for passenger traffic and freight transport and sovereign liability. Under the sovereign liability clause, the Centre could not order closure of the new airport expect under grave situations such as war. The land required for the airport had been acquired and the ICICI Bank had already given a loan of Rs.700 crore for the purpose. He said the Union Cabinet was likely to give its approval to the two issues by June-end after which the construction would start. The other important project for which the State Government was keen on getting the Centre's sanction was for setting up an international convention centre. The centre, Mr. Jairaj said, was planning to have such centres in Mumbai and Delhi.
