Rs.1-lakh award for communal harmony

VIRUDHUNAGAR, JUNE 7. The State Government has presented a cash award, for 2003-04, of Rs. 1 lakh to the Tamilpadi panchayat falling under the Thiruchuli panchayat union in appreciation of its practice of communal harmony and abolition of untouchability.

The State had announced that the award would be given to an Adi Dravida village for communal harmony and untouchability. The award would be used to provide basic amenities to the village.

Distributing the award at a grievance day meeting held here recently, the Collector, A. Mohammed Aslam, advised the people to use the award to implement development works including regularisation of drinking water supply, road-laying and road development works, renovation of school buildings, construction of schools and children welfare centre buildings and water tubs for cattle.

The Collector also distributed solatium to victims of violence. He presented a cheque for Rs. 2 lakhs to Ramuthai of S. Pudupatti in Sivakasi taluk, and cheques for Rs. 6250 each to Rajaguru of Jegannathapuram in Sattur taluk and Rengan of Varattanpatti in Srivilliputtur taluk.

Mr. Aslam gave away loans of Rs.1.30 lakhs to 13 persons who had given up illicit arrack trade.

The District Rehabilitation Committee has decided to disburse loans of Rs.10,000 each from the District Rehabilitation Fund to 13 persons (two from Sundararajapuram in Rajapalayam taluk and 11 from Ammanpatti in Thiruchuli taluk) for self-employment.

According to an official release, Mr. Aslam distributed amounts of Rs.6000 each to 19 aged poor artists for 2003-04 under the financial assistance scheme of the Department of Art and Culture.
