KOCHI, JUNE 7. The first World Rubber Congress will be held here on June 17 and 18. Nearly 300 delegates, including 30 from foreign countries, are expected to participate in the Congress, which will showcase the status of rubber industry in the various technical sessions to be addressed by experts. The discussion would revolve around policy, trade, technology, challenges, supply and demand, forecast and integration of the country with world rubber economy, rubber futures and preparing a rubber vision for 2010, the organisers said here today. On the sidelines of the technical sessions, a buyer-seller meet would be held. India is the world's third largest producer and fourth largest consumer of natural rubber. It ranks fifth in production of natural and synthetic rubber together. Besides, it is the largest manufacturer of reclaimed rubber. According to the Rubber Board, the rubber exports from the country exceeded 60,000 tonnes during 2003-04. The import of rubber stood at more than 37,000 tonnes till March this year. The rubber production is likely to settle at 7,11,000 tonnes owing to the better rubber prices prevailing now. This will be 9.5 per cent higher than last year's production levels. The price of rubber has also increased in both domestic market and international market. The World Rubber Congress will present the latest developments in the sector. One of the issues to be discussed is the global trade dynamics and the price outlook. According to Kailash Singh, managing director of the Mumbai-based Tefla's Events, which is organising the Congress, the meet would also focus on futures trading in rubber. The participants include rubber growers, plantation owners, processors, manufacturers of finished products, traders, research centres, financial institutions, policy makers and officials from the Central and State Governments, machinery manufacturers and service providers. T. Vidyasagar, president of COMEX, said the World Rubber Congress should be made into an annual event.
