PUDUKOTTAI, JUNE 7 . The district administration has identified 4,600 volunteers under a special literacy programme to enable them teach and train non-literate and semi-literate self-help group members in villages. The training programme was organised jointly by the District Rural Development Agency and the District Continuing Education Programme with funds given under the Sampoorna Gramin Rozgar Yojana. In the first two rounds that were completed at the block and sub-block level, as many as 3,400 volunteers were trained. In the third phase, a total of 1,200 volunteers would be covered. The programme commenced last month and it would be completed by June 25, sources told The Hindu on Sunday. The volunteers were enlightened about adult psychology, how to teach the non-literate and semi-literate in innovate ways, and motivate them to learn. They were provided with teaching and learning materials. Materials like slate, pencils and chalk pieces were distributed to non-literate women members. The survey conducted recently by the District Continuing Education Programme among 4,600 SHGs, mostly SGRY groups, revealed that out of a total of 92,000 female members, as many as 32,000 were non-literate and 27,000 semi-literate. The volunteers, who completed the training programme, started taking classes in their respective villages. They were also training them in some activity so that they would attend classes and earn income. The master trainers would monitor the classes being taken by the volunteers at the village level periodically.
