ESPN STAR Sports clarifies

Regarding the UNI report, `Dalmiya accused of hijacking ACC,' published in these columns in the issue dated 7-6-2004, Mr. Himanshu Verma, Associate Director, Corporate Communications, ESPN STAR Sports clarifies:

"All aspects where ESPN STAR Sports has been mentioned in the article are factually incorrect, speculative and malicious.

"ESPN STAR Sports is Asia's largest sports broadcaster and has rights to some of the finest sports properties across various disciplines. These `sports properties' are bid for and acquired in competitive bids. It is completely false to state that we have any `tacit understanding' in place for acquiring `Asia Cup' rights as the article elaborates.

"We would also like to clarify that our production team is in Sri Lanka to carry out routine reconnaissance, which is conducted to get an idea of level of resources required for telecast.

"We wish to dispel the wrong notions presented to the readers of your newspaper.

"We have complete faith in the `Asian Cricket Council' and believe that the bidding process will be fair and transparent."
