CHENNAI, JUNE 7. The Union Minister of State for Railways, R. Velu, has said that an additional Rs. 11-crore would be spent to deal with the problem of `loose soil' on the Perungudi-Velachery section of the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) project. After inspecting the work between Tiruvanmiyur and Velachery on Sunday, the Minister said the money would be used to construct the pile foundation and elevated structure. Mr. Velu also told Railway officials to submit a detailed report for extension of the project from Velachery to St. Thomas Mount, Villivakkam and Ennore, to get funds within this year. The Minister said `turn back' facility would be provided at Perungudi station by October, which will enable operation of more services. He also inspected the passenger amenities at the Chennai Beach station. V. Anand, General Manager, Southern Railway, accompanied him.
