Steps taken to control diarrhoea

ERODE, JUNE 8. The district administration has taken measures to control the diarrhoea outbreak, especially in hilly areas, said Erode District Collector D. Karthikeyan in a press release here today.

The Collector convened an urgent meeting of health departmental officials and panchayat personnel last night, regarding the diarrhoea outbreak in Thingalure village area, Sathyamangalam taluk. He told these officials to instruct the public, mainly people living in slums, to use only boiled chlorinated water. The Collector has also ordered local bodies to treat the water with prescribed levels of chlorine, before supplying it to the public.

He urged the public to approach Government Hospitals or Primary Health Centres, if they developed vomiting or diarrhoea. He said doctors were available round-the-clock and that the medical centres were stocked with medicines to treat diarrhoea.

On June 4, some tribals in the Thingalure panchayat developed diarrhoea and the Health Departmental officials suspect that human excreta was mixed with stagnant water. The Collector denied reports about the spreading of cholera and diarrhoea in all areas of the district.

More than 20 health department officials are camping in Sujilkara and other tribal areas in Thingalure panchayat, providing Oral Rehydration Solution to tribals. The health officials were also chlorinating water sources. The Collector allayed fears of a cholera outbreak. He said Pooran (60) who died on June 7, succumbed to diarrhoea and a kidney problem, not cholera.
