This Day That Age
Considerable significance is attached in informed circles to the meeting in New Delhi on June 6 between Prime Minister Nehru and the French Ambassador, Count Ostrorog. The announcement of the breakdown of the Paris talks came late last week. Count Ostrorog, who was participating in the Paris discussions, returned to New Delhi and had an interview with Mr. Nehru. Till late last week reports received in New Delhi of the progress of the talks were by no means discouraging and no clarification is available for the almost abrupt ending of the talks. The French proposal for a joint administration in the settlements is a complicated one, which needs careful and patient examination. The fact that Count Ostrorog rushed to New Delhi and explained his Government's version of the negotiations to the Prime Minister lends support to the belief that the infructuous Paris talks need not be considered as having rung down the curtain on a peaceful solution of the problem.
