KARWAR, JUNE 8. An idol of Jataka, a local deity, was found desecrated at Kottibhag near Bhatkal on Sunday. According to reports, some persons reportedly broke open the doors of the temple located on a hill near Mugdum colony, brought out the idol from the sanctum sanctorum, and placed it outside the temple after covering it with a white cloth. The hands of the idol were reportedly mutilated. Tension prevailed in the town for some time when people gathered in large numbers near the temple after hearing about the incident from the temple priest. However, intervention by the police led by the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Lavakumar, helped control the situation. The police restored the idol to the sanctum sanctorum with the help of the people. D.J. Naik, Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party district unit, Dinesh Naik, convener of the Hindu Jagaran Vedike district unit, and Raghavir Bilgi of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad have criticised those responsible for the incident. The Superintendent of Police, Soumendu Mukherji, has been camping at Bhatkal to oversee the security arrangements.
