Amateur astronomer and science teacher Haronahalli Swamy (left) explaining the significance of the transit of Venus to people in Shimoga on Tuesday.
SHIMOGA, JUNE 8. A large number of people who had gathered here to watch the transit of Venus today, returned disappointed because of cloudy weather. Some people were lucky and could watch the event for a short while when clouds parted, thanks to arrangements made by the Media Group, a cultural and educational voluntary organisation. Over 1500 people, a majority of them schoolchildren, had gathered near the office of the Media Group near the Government School at Durgi Gudi. Powerful telescopes were installed under the guidance of an amateur astronomer and Haronahalli Swamy, a science teacher. Special mirrors were also installed to reflect the image of the celestial event on the walls. But the weather played spoiltsport and deprived people of the opportunity to view the rare phenomenon. However, Mr. Swamy explained the significance of the event in a three-hour question and answer session. A teacher at the SGMR High School in Bhadravati, Mr. Swamy has engaged himself in several activities, which aim at inculcating a scientific temperament among children. He has held over 170 such programmes.
