PUCL takes up `abduction' case

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE, JUNE 8. The People's Union for Civil Liberties, Karnataka, has taken up a case involving Nayaz (38), a fish merchant in the city, who was allegedly taken to Pune by the Maharashtra police and later released.

According to Mr. Nayaz, a resident of Banashankari, he was picked up at gunpoint by seven persons, who came by a car, near his workplace on Residency Road on June 3. He was released two days later. While in captivity, he was threatened, but was not physically tortured. He was driven to Pune where the car was stopped in front of a police station after which Mr. Nayaz realised that the men were from the police force. He was not allowed to contact his family. After taking his valuables worth Rs. 18,000, he was released with only Rs. 1,220 for his travel. On his return to Bangalore, he complained to the Commissioner of Police, S. Marisamy, who promised him that action would be taken.

"They kept asking me if I was Nayaz Ansari. I was held at gunpoint and questioned if I possessed property, money and RDX," Mr. Nayaz told the PUCL.

Hasan Mansur, president of PUCL, Karnataka, said that it was a violation of the Supreme Court directive which stated that a police officer who arrested or detained any person should have his name badge or be in uniform and two civilians should attest the arrest.
