Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to Kalpana Sharma's article, `How healthy is our system?' (June 8). To improve the health of our people, especially those in villages, drastic steps such as insisting that all doctors do a stint of rural service should be taken. Perhaps, the compulsory course of house surgeon could be made a 3-year one with the final term meant for rural service. The doctors should be provided with travelling facilities so that they can stay in the nearest town and go to work. They should visit a village at least twice a week. This way, we will have a large number of doctors available and hopefully there will be some improvement in the health level of our people.
