Sri Lankan rupee sinks

COLOMBO, JUNE 8. The Sri Lankan rupee sank to its lowest level ever against the U.S. dollar today, the central bank said, amid fears that the country's civil war could resume.

The dollar bought 100.13 rupees in afternoon trading, rising from 99.32 earlier in the day and above the psychologically important 100 rupee mark, the central bank said. It was the Sri Lankan currency's lowest level since the Government in 2001 let it trade freely against the greenback.
