KOLKATA, JUNE 8. In a bid to complement their attempts at countering militancy in West Bengal, the police in the State will now be turning to man's best friend. For the first time, the State police will be raising dog squads to be deployed in three districts of the State. The sniffer dogs will be trained to detect explosives and hidden landmines used by extremists. The decision to raise these squads was ratified at a meeting of the State Cabinet today. The dogs are to be put on stand-by duty in Jalpaiguri district in north Bengal and the two southern districts of West Midnapore and Murshidabad. Despite a lull in the activities of the Kamtapur Liberation Organisation [KLO] in the wake of the anti-insurgency operations by the Royal Bhutanese Army in parts of south Bhutan in December-January, militants belonging to the outfit are suspected to be sheltered in parts of Jalpaiguri district, considered the epicentre of KLO activities for the past few years. Activities of naxalite groups such as the Peoples War [PW] and the Maoist Communist Centre [MCC] in parts of West Midnapore, particularly those areas bordering Jharkhand State, continues to be a matter of concern to the State Government.
