PONDICHERRY, JUNE 8. Members of the Mahe-based Tagore Park Samrakshana Samithi today went on an eight-hour fast here to urge the Administration to cancel the lease given to a private entrepreneur for maintenance and development of the Tagore Park at Mahe. The Samithi president, T. Ashok Kumar, earlier led a procession from the Odiansalai ground to the Bharathi park, the venue of the fast. The protesters displayed placards criticising the Mahe Municipality's decision to lease the park for a paltry amount. They alleged that several precious and old trees has been felled in the garb of development. They wanted a full-fledged enquiry by the Vigilance Department into the lease agreement. Leaders of various political parties, who spoke in support of the protesters, criticised the unilateral decision by the Mahe Municipality and urged the withdrawal of the lease agreement.'
