Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JUNE 8. The Pondicherry government-sponsored Tourism and Transport Development Corporation (PTTDC) will be bifurcated to facilitate intensive promotion of the two sectors separately, informed sources told The Hindu here today. The PTTDC's loss had been brought down to Rs. 35 lakhs from Rs. 1.80 crores suffered by it three years ago. The sources said staff redeployment and structure rationalisation were mainly responsible for this. The bifurcation would further help the management's bid to turn things around. Steps had been taken for the immediate settlement of bills for the food supplied by Le Cafe and other restaurants run by the Corporation to enable them to function efficiently.
Development of historical sites
The sources said an action plan had been drawn up by the Department of Tourism to attract tourists. Development of historical sites was part of the programme. The Arikamedu site in the Ariankuppam commune panchayat was being developed in collaboration with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Arikamedu, situated in the backwaters of Bay of Bengal, was an important trading port between 200 BC and 200 AD, with commercial products being exported to Rome from here. The Union Territory Administration had acquired the 35-acre site and handed it over to the ASI for development. The Union Tourism and Culture Ministry was sanctioning more tourism projects for Pondicherry. The Union Territory Administration had proposed to develop an eco tourist island in the Yanam region (an enclave of Pondicherry in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh), a tourist complex at the Chunnambar river water resort at Poornankuppam, development of an art and crafts village at Murungapakkam, improving facilities in the temple town of Tirunallar and developing a new beach in Pondicherry.
