17 killed in road accident

MARTUR,
JUNE 8.
As many as 17 persons, including five women and seven children, were killed in a road accident on the National Highway-5, near Konanki in Martur mandal in Prakasam district, early on Tuesday.
The accident occurred when the Tata Sumo in which they were travelling was involved in a head-on collision with an oncoming rice-laden truck, according to the Ongole Revenue Divisional Officer, A. Prasad, who rushed to the spot to supervise relief operations,
All those aboard Sumo, who were returning to their native villages in Chennur and Mandamarri mandals in Adilabad district after pilgrimage to Tirumala, died on the spot. The police had a tough time retrieving the bodies crushed in the mangled vehicle.
The police believe that the accident might have occurred due to negligent driving by the Sumo driver, Bhoomaiah alias Sadanandam (27), who also died on the spot.
