IDUKKI, JUNE 8. Tension is mounting in the Thattekanni area of the district with the local settlers organising themselves to check any attempt by the authorities to evict them from their lands in the coming days. The Forest Department has already given notice to 34 families which had settled in the Kanjikuzhy village before 1977 to vacate their cultivated lands on grounds of unauthorised settlement in the forest area, official sources said. The department was planning to forcefully evict the families in the next few days and the agitated settlers have teamed-up to check the attempt, creating tension in the area, they said. The Chief Minister and political party leaders had assured them that there would not be any forceful eviction, but forest officials were going ahead with their plans, a spokesman for the settlers alleged. With monsoon lashing the area, the families want the Government's intervention in the issue at the earliest. UNI
