Dindigul
By Our Staff Reporter
DINDIGUL, JUNE 8. The Dindigul Collector, S. Murugaia, today advised District Rural Development Agency officials to rear rabbits and set up beehives to convert the Vaivespuram integrated agriculture farm into a full-fledged training centre and model farm for multi-cropping pattern. Distributing hybrid tomato saplings to farmers at the farm in the Vedasanthur union near here, Mr. Murugaia said that efforts would be made to supply rabbits from the Department of Animal Husbandry. "A sum of Rs. 56,000 has been sanctioned for the construction of a training centre in the farm to enable farmers to get on-land field training in hi-tech farming, vegetable cultivation through drip irrigation, multi-cropping pattern, organic farming and vermi-composting." He said that 40 members were producing tomato, brinjal and green chillies seedlings. While vermi-compost produced at the nursery was sold at Rs. 8 per kg, mushroom was sold at Rs.60 per kg. The Collector also advised the officials to create two fields in the nursery, one using regular agri-inputs and another using organic manure with hi-tech breeds to enable farmers to understand growth and yield of crops through both the methods. Each seedling was sold at 50 paise with a 50 per cent subsidy. Mr. Murugaia appealed to the farmers to use the facilities available in the farm and enhance agri-income, applying the latest techniques. The Project Economist, K. Ganesan, said the farm had kept a stock of 98,000 brinjal and tomato saplings, which were ready to be distributed among the farmers.
