Mentally ill boy rescued from borewell after 11-hour operation

By Our Staff Reporter

DINDIGUL, JUNE 8. After an 11-hour-long ordeal, the fire service personnel today rescued a six-year-old mentally challenged boy who fell into a dry borewell on a farm at Vannampatti, 20 km from Dindigul town.

Kondammal, who took her grandson, Deivaraj, to the farm, was busy cutting grass, when the boy fell into the abandoned borewell. He was caught between the inner walls at 30 feet of the 400-foot-deep borewell.

About 20 fire service personnel led by the District Fire Officer, Mohammad Mohideen, and the Assistant District Fire Officer, A. Karunakaran, rushed to the spot. Earth moving equipment were pressed into service to dig a hole parallel to the borewell. A team of health officials injected oxygen into the borewell.

After digging for about 20 feet, the rescue operation was disrupted with the detection of a rocky surface. The team brought a rock-breaking machine fitted to a tractor around 7 p.m.

While breaking of the rocks took considerable time, the police team tied a `S'-shaped iron rod with a rope and dropped it into the borewell.

The team locked the rod with the boy's body. Immediately, it pulled the child out of the borewell. The boy received minor injuries. However, his condition was stable. After preliminary treatment, he was taken to the Dindigul Government Hospital.
