Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, JUNE 8. The Pattali Makkal Katchi MP from Pondicherry, M. Ramadoss, has requested the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, to ensure that Karaikal receives six tmcft (thousand million cubic feet) of water, earmarked for the region in the June 25, 1991 interim award of the Cauvery River Water Disputes Tribunal. This is out of 205 tmcft to be released by Karnataka to Tamil Nadu. Mr. Ramadoss said over telephone from Delhi that he had today presented a representation to the Prime Minister apprising him of the woes of Karaikal farmers owing to non-availability of the stipulated quantum. Paddy was the major crop in Karaikal and the coverage this year was around 11,300 hectares. The entire farm operations depended on Cauvery water, as there was no major irrigation project in Karaikal, Mr. Ramadoss said in his plea. The region received just 0.877 tmcft in 2002-2003 and 0.972 tmcft in 2003-2004.
