Kurnool
By Our Staff Reporter
KURNOOL, JUNE 8. The Horticulture Department is planning to motivate farmers of tomato belt in Kurnool district to take up cultivation of `biodiesel' plants along the boundaries for stable income. Tomato is cultivated on 30,000 acres in Aspari, Pathikonda and Alur areas. The farmers resort to distress sale in October and November when the prices decline steeply. The Assistant Director of Horticulture, M.V. Ramana Prasad, said farmers would be advised to grow ganuga tree along the field boundaries which would fetch them stable income. A detailed project report was being prepared to be sent to the Government for assistance. An extraction plant which would cost Rs 5 lakhs was also being planned for easy marketability of their produce. There was scope for cultivating ganuga on 60,000 acres in the first phase. Mr. Prasad said only ganuga was being promoted in the first phase as the planting material would be available easily at less price. On the other hand, the other species like jatropa were priced at Rs 20 to 30 per plant. Also, tissue culture banana was being promoted on 100 hectares this year. The experimental plantation last year brought about the best result. Through the tissue culture banana, the incidence of leaf spot disease could be effectively controlled. This year drip irrigation was planned on 14,000 hectares. Last year, 4,000 hectares were covered.
