DAVANGERE, JUNE 8. A large number of farmers laid a siege to the office of the Agriculture Department at Jagalur on Tuesday in protest against the failure of the department to supply seeds at subsidised rate. Nearly 300 farmers, who arrived at the agricultural office to buy seeds, were shocked when the agricultural officers refused to sell them seeds citing an instruction from the higher-ups. The agricultural officers told the farmers that Rs. 44 lakhs subsidy had been sanctioned to Jagalur taluk and that seeds had been distributed in excess of the sanctioned subsidy. The farmers threatened the officials that they would intensify their agitation if they (officers) failed to resume supply of seeds at subsidised rates in the next three days.
