Jammu & Kashmir
SRINAGAR, JUNE 8. Jammu and Kashmir government today said it would fill the seats reserved for women in panchayats through elections and not by nominations, as was the practice. ``Women representatives to the panchayats would now be elected and not nominated'', minister for rural development and panchayati raj, Peerzada Mohammad Sayed told PTI. He said the government was committed to 33 per cent reservation for women in panchayats and the process of identifying the seats to be reserved for them has commenced which would be completed within two months. Without giving exact date for panchayat polls in the state, Sayed said elections to the nearly 1000 panchayats out of the 2700, which could not be held in 2001 due to turmoil, would be held within four months. The electoral rolls would be thoroughly revised before the elections, he said adding that the government wanted to strengthen democracy. PTI
