Tribunal chairperson dead

CHENNAI, JUNE 8. After serving as judicial officer for nearly 40 years, Justice A. Subbulakshmi, Chairperson of the Debts Recovery Appellate Tribunal (DRAT) here, died today. She was 64. Enrolled as advocate in October 1962, Justice Subbulakshmi practised in civil and criminal matters in Tiruvallur and Chengalpattu districts. She was appointed sub-magistrate in November 1965 and promoted district munsif in December 1970. She became the district and sessions Judge in June 1987. Justice Subbulakshmi also worked on the Sales Tax Appellate Tribunal as its Chairperson from March 1991 to May 1993.

She was appointed additional judge of the Madras High Court on July 9, 1997, and became a permanent judge on June 17, 1999. Justice Subbulakshmi attained superannuation in the High Court on February 15, 2002 and was appointed to the DRAT the same month. She is survived by her husband, A. Shanmugam, a retired IAS officer, and two sons. Cremation is scheduled to take place at Besant Nagar here on Thursday.
