`Police could have prevented attack on CPI(M) worker's house'

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JUNE 8. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has urged the State Government to take immediate action against those responsible for the May 13 attack on Democratic Progressive Alliance volunteers at Rameswaram.

Adopting a resolution, the party, at its three-day State committee meeting, which began at Courtallam yesterday, said the attack was carried out with lethal weapons when the volunteers were celebrating the alliance's victory in the general elections. The police did not act though a complaint was filed. Protesting against the inaction, the CPI (M) staged a demonstration.

Infuriated over this, a group went to the house of a CPI (M) district committee member and ransacked his house. A boat belonging to another volunteer was set on fire. Had the police taken timely action, the damage could have been avoided. The party demanded that all those responsible should be arrested.
