Bail denied to HAL official
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI,
JUNE 8.
A special court for CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) cases today declined to grant bail to a senior Hindustan Aeronautics Limited official and a computer professional, arrested for allegedly attempting to bribe a CBI staff member.
The special judge, T. Ramasamy, dismissing the plea by Avtar Krishen Zutshi and Manikandan, said he was not inclined to enlarge them on bail as the case was in a `crucial stage.' Stating investigation was still on, the judge expressed satisfaction with the medical care given to the accused when they were in CBI custody.
According to the prosecution, Mr. Manikandan was trapped offering Rs. 50,000 to the CBI staff member for preparing a `favourable report' in a disproportionate wealth case against Mr. Zutshi.
The two were sent to 10-day CBI custody on May 31. Though the custody period is valid till June 9, the CBI produced both of them in the court on Monday itself. They were later remanded to judicial custody.
