`Quit demand ridiculous'

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JUNE 8. The Congress' demand for the resignation of the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government following its defeat in the Lok Sabha election is ridiculous and lacks logic, says the Bharatiya Janata Party national council member, H.V. Hande.

In a statement, Dr. Hande said the Congress should first ask its governments in Kerala and Punjab, where the party was defeated in the recent election, to step down.

Moreover, Justice R.S. Sarkaria in his report on Centre-State relations, clearly stated the Lok Sabha election results could never form the basis for forcing a State government to quit.

This view was given a statutory form by the Supreme Court judgment in the S.R. Bommai case in 1994.
