New farm varsity courses
COIMBATORE JUNE 8. The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has introduced Agricultural Meteorology, Biochemical Technology and Bioinformatics courses in its master degree programme from this academic year (2004-05). The courses will be offered on a self-supporting basis. Applications are invited from eligible candidates from State agricultural universities and the last date for receipt of the applications is June 23, says a university release. Seats are also available under the self-supporting system for other master's/doctoral subjects as announced earlier. For students of Master of Business Administration under the regular stream an additional fee of Rs. 5,000 per semester will be charged over and above the regular fee. Date extended
The TNAU has extended the last date for receipt of applications for undergraduate courses to June 15 from June 11.
Teachers' board selection list
CHENNAI June 8. The `second list' of eligible candidates called for verification of certificates for the posts of junior postgraduate assistants in government higher secondary schools has been released by the Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB) on its web site, www.chennaionline.com/trbresults and put up on the notice board of the TRB on EVK Sampath Malaigai, College Road, Chennai 6. The examination was held on November 16, 2003 and the list of candidates provisionally selected for appointment has already been released, says an official release. The second list has now been released for the remaining vacancies.
Fora to promote education
CHENNAI JUNE 8. The Real Youth to Youth (Real) and the American Hindu Association (AHA) will be inaugurated here tomorrow. Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal and Sri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal of the Kanchi mutt will inaugurate these fora, in the presence of Bodhamayananda of the Ramakrishna Mission and Amaresh Chaitanya of the Chinmaya Mission, at the German Hall, T.Nagar. The Real promotes reading, writing and basic education by providing some infrastructure to rural youth. It also offers scholarships to children who wish to study beyond seventh grade. The AHA intends to provide leadership and resources to younger generation by promoting awareness of principle and practices of our tradition and customs.
PMK protests high course fee
CHENNAI JUNE 8. Members of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) led by the party president, G.K. Mani, today held a demonstration at Valluvar Kottam here, protesting the dualism in holding tests for admissions to engineering and medical courses as also the high course fees. ``When Anna University is holding tests, where is the necessity to hold yet another test by a consortium of private colleges and that too, so many days after the TNPCEE?'' demanded the protestors. Another demand was that the high rates of course fee being charged in professional colleges be brought down. In Maharashtra, the fee had been reduced by more than half this year, after a committee constituted as per the Supreme Court orders recommended the reduction. A similar change must be effected in Tamil Nadu to enable students from the middle class and lower economic groups to join professional courses, they argued.
200 camps for PF scheme held
CHENNAI JUNE 8. The Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPF), which is in the process of allotting National Social Security Number (NSSN) to all subscribers of the EPF scheme, 1952, has so far conducted 200 camps in Tamil Nadu to take photographs of the members, a prelude to allotment of NSSN. To accelerate the process, employers covered under the PF scheme are requested to extend their cooperation in securing the members' data in the format prescribed by the organisation and forward it to the regional/ sub-regional / sub-accounts offices of the EPFO. They are advised to contact the respective office and furnish the data quickly to make the project a success. In the Tamil Nadu region, the regional office is located at Royapettah, Chennai, two sub-accounts offices are at Ambattur and Tambaram and sub-regional offices at Vellore, Salem, Coimbatore, Tiruchi, Madurai and Tirunelveli. A district union office is functioning in Pondicherry, says a PF office release. The security number will enable the subscribers to get the settlement early and avoid transfer of their PF accounts in the event of change of employment.
Appointed member of CBDT
CHENNAI JUNE 8. Radha Balakrishnan, who is at present the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax-I and Cadre Controlling Authority of the IT Department, Tamil Nadu region, has been promoted and appointed Member of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), New Delhi. Belonging to the 1967 batch of the Indian Revenue Service, Mrs. Balakrishnan is the first woman from South India to be nominated to the board, says an official release.
Sanction accorded
PERAMBALUR JUNE 8 . Under the Prime Minister Rozgar Yojana, sanction was accorded to 375 persons in the district to start business during 2003-2004. Of this, banks disbursed loans to 268 beneficiaries. According to a press release here today, applications from 172 persons were forwarded to banks. Those interested can obtain applications, free of cost, from the General Manager, District Industries Centre, Ariyalur.
`Jamabandhi'
PUDUKOTTAI JUNE 8. `Jamabandhi' commenced in nine taluks in the district today. The Collector, Jatindranath Swain, conducted a `jamabandhi' at the Alangudi taluk office and received petitions from the public from 12 villages. The Collector gave away patta transfer orders to five persons, a press release issued here today said. The District Revenue Officer, V. Shobana, conducted a `jamabandhi' at the Avudaiyarkoil taluk office and the Pudukottai Sub-Collector, Santosh K. Misra, conducted one at the Kolathur taluk office. Jamabandhis were conducted in the taluk offices at Manamelkudi, Aranthangi, Illupur, Thirumayam and Gandarvakottai.
Summer festival
NAGAPATTINAM JUNE 8 . The 10-day annual beach summer festival, organised by the Tourism Department in association with district administration, Nagapattinam Beach Development Association and voluntary organisations, was attracting tourists. The Collector, M. Veera Shanmugha Moni, inaugurated an exhibition yesterday. K. Elangovan, Tourist Officer, Poompuhar, said that a number of cultural and entertainment programmes were arranged. The festival will conclude on Sunday.

Tiruchi June 8. Water level at the Mettur reservoir stood at 38.15feet today. The inflow was 1989 cusecs and the discharge 149 cusecs.
Three held for murder
Dharmapuri June 8. Three persons were arrested on charges of murdering a 45-year-old man at Eriyur here on Sunday. The police said that Krishnan of Eriyur had a property dispute with Irusappan (55) of the same area. Following a quarrel, Irusappan along with his sons Arasu (28) and Ravi (25) attacked Krishnan with deadly weapons. He died on the spot.
Kills daughter, self
ERODE JUNE 8. A girl was killed when her father set her on fire at Vemandampalayam in Gobichettipalayam on Monday night. The police said that Somasundaram (45), an agricultural labourer, was mentally ill. He was living with his wife, Kannammal, and daughters Lavanya (12) and Chitradevi (9). Last night, when Kannammal and Lavanya left the house to collect water, Somasundaram allegedly poured kerosene over Chitradevi and set her on fire. He then poured kerosene over his body and set himself on fire. They were rushed to the Gobichettipalayam Government Hospital, where they died.
Arrack seized
Krishnagiri June 8. The Prohibition Enforcement Wing personnel seized 700 litres of illicit arrack at Bargur on Monday. The police said following instructions from the Superintendent of Police, M.Ashok Kumar, a team, which was checking vehicles, intercepted a car on the Krishnagiri-Kandikuppam road and seized the arrack. The car driver was arrested and the car seized.

YERCAUD JUNE 8. The police arrested seven youths, who under the influence of liquor, obstructed traffic on the Salem-Yercaud ghat road on Monday night. The youths from Guhai in Salem city went to the hill station in a car. On their way up, they stopped the car and consumed alcohol. Later, in an inebriated condition, they started causing nuisance to the travelling public by stopping cars and other vehicles. Irritated over this, a few tourists informed the Yercaud Police, which rushed to the spot and arrested them. The youths were in the age group of 20 to 28. All of them were remanded in judicial custody.
Two held on charge of stealing
Tuticorin June 8. The Kovilpatti east police have arrested two persons on charges stealing cash and a mobile phone from a trader. The police said Nagarajan (30) of Ponnagaram in Madurai district and Muthukrishnan (22) of Gandhi Nagar in Kovilpatti stole Rs.10,000 in cash and a mobile phone, worth Rs. 8,000, from the house of Mariappan (60) on Kovilpatti main road on May 16. Based on a complaint lodged by Mr. Mariappan, the police today arrested Nagarajan and Muthukrishnan.
Women lay siege to town panchayat office
THENI JUNE 8. A total of 75 women of Jakkampatti today laid siege to the Aundipatti town panchayat office, seeking resumption of drinking water supply to their village. They demanded that the town panchayat administration take immediate steps to dig a bore well as water supply was erratic at Jakkampatti. Later, they withdrew the agitation, as the officials assured to make steps to streamline water supply to their village.
Girl killed in road mishap
Ramanathapuram June 8. A 19-year-old girl was killed when an autorickshaw hit a lorry from behind near Uchipuli today. According to the police, the accident occurred when the autorickshaw was coming from Irumeni to Ramanathapuram. All four passenger of a family were injured and taken to the Government Hospital. But one of them, Deepa, died on the way.
Youth commits suicide
TIRUNELVELI June 8. A youth committed suicide last night after his father scolded him. The police said M. Chelladurai (30) of Rajakudiyiruppu near Palayamkottai consumed poison yesterday after his father, Mookkan, had scolded him for having taken Rs.300 from a locker without his permission. As he collapsed in his house, he was taken to a private hospital and then was referred to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital, where he died last night.
House burgled
Tirunelveli June 8. The Palayamkottai police are looking for those who burgled cash and some domestic articles, worth Rs.20,000 from the house of a transport official. The police said the burglars entered the house of Nagarajan at Vannarpettai when his wife was having a chat with her neighbours. Besides taking Rs.17,000 in cash, the culprits also stole some domestic articles.
Man robbed of cash
Tuticorin June 8. A sales representative of a private firm here was robbed of Rs.10,000 and a gold ornament, weighing 12 grams. The police said Rajendran (20) of Tenkasi in Tirunelveli district was returning to Tuticorin in a bus last evening after collecting money from his customers at Eral and Pazhayakaayal, when four unidentified persons picked a quarrel with him. The conductor asked them to get down from the bus, as it was nearing Muthaiahpuram near here. Once the bus left the place, the foursome attacked Mr. Rajendran and robbed him of the cash and golden ring.
