Law and order situation bad in U.P.: Rahul

By J.P. Shukla

JAGDISH PUR (AMETHI), JUNE 8. The Congress Member of Parliament, Rahul Gandhi, today expressed concern over the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh but said he could do little about it as it was a State subject.

The situation was "really bad in Uttar Pradesh and worse in Rae Bareli," the constituency represented by his mother, Sonia Gandhi, he said adding that Congress workers were being targeted almost on a regular basis in Rae Bareli.

Talking to newspersons informally after addressing a meeting of his party workers here, Mr. Gandhi agreed that there was not much coordination between the Congress and the Samajwadi Party despite the fact that the two parties had extended mutual support for running the Governments in New Delhi and Lucknow.

On whether this might lead to Central action against the U.P. Government, he said this was a matter to be decided by the senior leaders of his party.
