TSR heads new TTD board

Hyderabad: The Government has reconstituted the Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanams Board with T. Subbarami Reddy as its chairman and 12 others as members. The term of the board will be two years with effect from June 8.

According to an order issued by the Government on Tuesday, the members are: G. Kuthuhalamma, MLA (Vepanjeri), Janga Krishna Murthy, MLA (Gurajala), D. Sridhar Babu, MLA (Manthani), Sama Ganesh Reddy (Hyderabad), K. Premasagar Rao (Dharmaraopet in Adilabad district), N. Srinivasan, managing director, India Cements, Chennai, Navaneeswara Reddy, Mundlapalli in Cuddapah district, Gokaraju Ramaraju, Juvvalapalem in West Godavari, Chadalavada Sudha, Vijayawada, and N. Nageswara Rao of NCS Estates, Vizianagaram. Ajeya Kallam, TTD Executive Officer, is ex-officio member-secretary, and the Commissioner for Endowments, ex-officio member.

Karunanidhi's recommendation?

It was understood that the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, nominated Mr. Srinivasan on the recommendation of the DMK president, M. Karunanidhi. The latter had made the request when Dr. Reddy visited Chennai on June 5 to attend the wedding of the former Mayor, M.K. Stalin's daughter. Traditionally, a well-known person from Tamil Nadu is nominated to the TTD Board.

Agriculture office stormed

KURNOOL: Farmers stormed the agriculture office at Bethamcharla in Kurnool district on Tuesday annoyed by failure of the department to distribute subsidised seed. Farmers from several villages gathered at the office but officials concerned expressed inability to supply seed immediately. Farmers staged a demonstration accusing officials of causing inconvenience to them. They said besides waste of time and money, they would miss the sowing season also.

Teacher bombed to death

KURNOOL: An angawadi teacher, Venkatalakshmi (25), was bombed to death by her husband, Lakshmi Reddy, at Banaganapalli town in Kurnool district on Tuesday. According to reports, Lakshmi Reddy had proposed to divorce her two years ago but disputes arose over payment of alimony. Reddy and his brother went to the house of his father-in-law, Nagireddy, and allegedly tried to murder him by throwing bombs. The bombs hit Venkatalakshmi who was in the cattle shed resulting in her instantaneous death.

AISF launches cycle jatha

CUDDAPAH: All-India Students Federation functionaries launched a three-day cycle `jatha' on Tuesday to enlighten farmers on the Government's relief package and motivate them not to commit suicide. Addressing the activists after flagging off the jatha at Kalakshetram here, the Cuddapah MLA, Md. Ahmedullah, said the Government was determined to safeguard the farmers' interests and lauded the AISF for undertaking the jatha. The senior CPI leader, K. Linga Murthy, urged the Government to expedite disbursal of assistance to avert suicides and grant fresh crop loans.

The AISF district president, N. Narasimhulu, and the secretary, G. Chandra, said the jatha was aimed at infusing confidence in farmers.

The jatha covered Moolavanka, Kammavaripalle, Gopalapuram, Chintakommadinne and Yellatur villages.

Probe into exchange of fire

ADILABAD: The incharge Collector, N. Mukteswara Rao, on Tuesday ordered a magisterial enquiry into the exchange of fire between the police and naxalites at Akenapalli in Bellampalli mandal on the intervening night of May 12 and 13 in which the coal belt secretary of People's War, Bollam Rajanarsu alias Balanna, and the district action team commander, Radapaka Shekhar alias Raghu, were killed. The enquiry would be conducted by the Mancherial RDO, M.V.V.S. Murthy, according to an official press release here.

Teachers invited for talks

HYDERABAD: The School Education Minister, N. Rajyalakshmi, has invited teachers' associations for discussions on June 11 at 11 a.m. in the office of Commissioner, according to M. Balakrishnamma, general secretary, Andhra Pradesh Teachers' Federation. He said in a statement here on Tuesday that issues such as inter-district transfer would be discussed.

Aid for workers' children

HYDERABAD: The Labour Welfare Organisation, Ministry of Labour, has invited applications for awarding financial assistance for education in 2004-05 to children of beedi/mine/cine workers. August 31 is the last date for receipt of applications for schools and colleges and September 30 for professional and degree couses.

A.K. Pradeep, Welfare Administrator, in a press release here on Tuesday said applications in the prescribed forms should be submitted to the Welfare Commissioner, Labour Welfare Organisation, Room No.54, Kendriya Sadan, Sultan Bazar, Koti, Hyderabad-500095 (in case of beedi, limestone, dolomite, iron, manganese and chrome ore mine workers and cine workers) and Welfare Administrator, LWO, Kalichedu-524409, Nellore (for mine workers).

Parvati scraps party panels

Hyderabad: The NTR TDP president, Lakshmi Parvati, on Tuesday scrapped her party's district committees in Hyderabad, Guntur, Cuddapah, Kurnool and East Godavari. She nominated the following as convenors of the district units: N.P. Krishna Rao - Hyderabad, G. Koteswara Rao - Guntur, S.S. Mishra - East Godavari, K. Obul Reddy - Cuddapah and B. Sivanagi Reddy - Kurnool. She also named Sharada as convenor of the party's women wing.

50 houses destroyed in fire

ONGOLE: Fifty houses were destroyed and property worth Rs.25 lakhs was destroyed in a fire in Gundamcherla of Pedaraveedu mandal in Prakasam district on Monday afternoon. According to information reaching here, the Pedaraveedu police rushed to the spot, 23 km from Markapur town, to undertake relief and rescue operations. However, no human loss was reported.

7 cm rainfall in Repalle

HYDERABAD: Repalle in Guntur district recorded a heavy rainfall of 7 cm on Tuesday. Bapatla, Cuddapah, 6 cm each, Bhadrachalam 5 cm, Srisailam 4 cm, Machilipatnam, Dummagudem, Prakasam barrage, 3 cm each, Hanamkonda, Vijayawada, Jagityal, Miryalaguda, Sattenapalle, 2 cm each, Guntur, Nandigama, Mahabubnagar, Podili, Ramayampet and Salur 1 cm each.

The maximum temperature of 40 degree Celsius was recorded by Nandigama.

Residential school admission

KARIMNAGAR: The district Tribal Welfare Officer, B. S. R. Babji, has invited applications for admission into Government tribal welfare residential schools in the district.

In a press note issued here today, Mr. Babji said admissions were open from Class 3 onwards into the residential schools at the Madaram, Pegadapalli, Damerakunta, Medipalli, Kaleshwaram, Mangela, Talla Dharmaram and Mirzapur villages.

Filled applications forms should be submitted on or before June 20, the release said. It added that details could be obtained from the tribal welfare office or any of the residential schools.

Appeal to ryots

NELLORE: The district unit of the Dalit Vidyarthi Sena has appealed to farmers not to resort to extreme action of committing suicide.

In a statement issued here on Tuesday, the Sena said suicide would not solve the problems. The functionaries of the Sena would soon undertake a tour of the district, to create an awareness among farmers, about the relief package announced by the Government.

Teachers' plea to fill posts

CHITTOOR: The AP Progressive Recognised Teachers Union State president, B. Mohan Reddy, has requested the Government to fill posts of headmaster, educational officer and teacher for improving standards in schools.

He asked the Government to undertake inter-district transfer of teachers soon. The district president, B. Bhaskar Reddy, and the associate president, Sekar Reddy, participated.

Train services cancelled

Srikakulam: In view of the gauge conversion works in Naupada-Gunupur section, train services will be cancelled on June 9, the Senior Divisional Commerical Manager of Waltair Division of the East Coast Railway said in a press release.

NCC cadets donate blood

Kakinada: About 28 NCC cadets, besides NCC officers, the camp deputy commandant, Major Anil Kumar, and second officer, V. Sridevi, donated blood at a camp organised by the Third Andhra Girls Battalion at the Government girls polytechnic premises here on Tuesday. The cadets belonging to both East and West Godavari districts who are attending the annual training camp here donated blood. The camp commandant, Lt. Col. Alok Sharma, who was the chief guest, complimented the NCC cadets and officers for their gesture.

Drive against illegal vending

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Waltair Division of the East Coast Railway is organising drives on a regular basis against unauthorised vending at Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram railway stations. "The drive is to check the menace of unauthorised vending/hawking on platforms and trains,'' a press release from the division said. During a recent drive, 39 hawkers were arrested for offence punishable under various Sections of the Railway Act of 1989.

Electrocuted Kakinada: A agricultural worker, Polisetti Bholokam (35), was electrocuted when he came in contact with a live wire while working in a cotton field in Vannepudi village on Monday. Gollaprolu police have registered a case.
