CPI campaign to prevent suicides

HYDERABAD,
JUNE 8.
The State Council of the CPI has decided to launch a campaign from June 15 to prevent farmers from committing suicide. A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting held on June 5 and 6 here.
In a statement, S. Sudhakar Reddy, secretary of the State Council of CPI, said the party would reach out to the farmers with the slogan, "Let us fight for freedom from debts and let us save our valuable lives". The meeting hailed the steps initiated by the Government for prevention of suicide of farmers. Measures for completion of pending irrigation projects and plans to commence talks with People's War naxalites too came in for praise.
The meeting suggested some more steps for dissuading farmers from committing suicide. These included implementation of Rural Indebtedness Act after changing it in tune with present day requirements, moratorium on recovery of loans given by commercial and cooperative banks and private moneylenders and issue of fresh crop loans for the kharif season.
