MARTUR, JUNE 8. As many as 17 persons, including five women and seven children, were killed in a road accident on the National Highway-5, near Konanki in Martur mandal in Prakasam district, early on Tuesday. According to the Ongole Revenue Divisional Officer, A. Prasad, who rushed to the spot to supervise relief operations, the accident occurred when the Tata Sumo in which they were travelling was involved in a head-on collision with an oncoming rice-laden truck. All those aboard Sumo, who were returning to their native villages in Chennur and Mandamarri mandals in Adilabad district after pilgrimage to Tirumala, died on the spot. The police had a tough time retrieving the bodies crushed in the mangled vehicle. The police believe that the accident might have occurred due to neglient driving by the Sumo driver, Bhoomaiah alias Sadanandam (27), who also died on the spot. They said that instead of keeping left the driver must have driven very fast on the right direction unmindful of the approaching lorry on the quadrilateral road. Among the dead five bore no injuries revealing that they died of shock and congestion as the ill-fated vehicle was overloaded. The victims who belonged to three families were related. They were identified as Janjarla Ramulu (60), his wife Durgamma (55), their son Bhaskar (32), his wife Kalpana (25) and son Durgaprasad (6 months), R. Lakshminarayana (48), believed to be the co-son-in-law of Ramulu, his wife Anjamma (39) and their children-- Priya (13) and Siva (10), Madhukar (31), son-in-law of Janjarla Ramulu, and his wife Karuna (23), mother Achhamma (52) and four other children-- Bharath alias Manjunatha (4), Maneesha (8), Manivaran (18 months) and Divya (2). Madhukar was panchayat secretary of Nagampet and Kondampet of Kotapally mandal in Adilabad district. Lorry driver and cleaner fled the scene leaving their vehicle.
