Air Marshal Nigam in Bangalore
Bangalore June 8. Air Marshal D.C. Nigam (in picture), Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief , Headquarters Maintenance Command of the Indian Air Force, and Kanak Nigam, President, Air Force Wives Welfare Association (AFWWA), arrived here on Tuesday on a two-day visit. During his stay, the Air Marshal will visit the Air Force Equipment Depot here and review the logistical support capabilities of the depot for production and overhaul of various aircraft and aero engines at the HAL Bangalore complex. He will meet the HAL Chairman. Kanak Nigam will review the welfare activities undertaken by the AFWWA. On his arrival at the airport, the Air Marshal was received by Group Capt. P.M. Radhakrishnan, Commanding Officer of the Equipment Depot and Nirmala Radhakrishnan.
CII team meets Dharam Singh
BANGALORE JUNE 8. The Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Karnataka, K.K. Swamy, and its Vice-Chairman, Daljit Mirchandani, met the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, on Tuesday. According to a press release, Mr. Swamy apprised the Chief Minister of various partnerships between the CII and the State Government to promote investment. He invited Mr. Singh to address the Southern Regional Council meeting of the CII to be held in Bangalore on June 12.
Meet on Rajkumar's films
BANGALORE JUNE 8. Kannada Jana Shakti will hold a symposium on June 21 and 22, on the occasion of matinee star Rajkumar's completion of 50 years in Kannada cinema. S.R. Govind, film producer, said here on Tuesday that the theme of the symposium would be "An overview of Rajkumar's contribution to Kannada film industry". It would discuss cultural roots in Rajkumar's performances, his role in pro-Kannada agitations, the influence his films had on society, and the role of films in building a modern society. C.K. Ramegouda, Kannada Jana Shakti President, said that six veteran artistes of Kannada cinema would be felicitated on the occasion. They are Shantamma, M .N. Lakshmidevi, B. Jaya, Sadashiv Brahmavar, Shanimahadevappa, and M. S. Umesh. The Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University, M. S. Thimmappa, would inaugurate the programme, he added.
MCH, M.Sc. results out
Bangalore June 8. The Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) on Tuesday announced the results of MCH (Urology), DOMS, first year M.Sc. (Nursing), first year M.Sc. (Psychosocial rehabilitation), and first year M.Pharma (Pharmacology, Pharma Chemistry and Pharmaceutics) examinations held in April and May. Nomination of MLA
Bangalore June 8. The Council of Ministers, which met on Tuesday, authorised the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, to select a person from the Anglo-Indian community in the State for nomination to the Legislative Assembly. The Minister for Large and Medium-scale Industries, P.G.R. Sindhia, told presspersons that Mr. Singh would select a person in due course. The former Test cricketer, Roger Binny, represented the community in the last Assembly. The Cabinet discussed the policy initiatives to be incorporated in the Governor's address to the joint session of the Legislature on June 11, Mr. Sindhia said.
Defence Pension Adalat
Bidar June 8. A Defence Pension Adalat will be held in Bangalore for two days from August 26. Families receiving pension from the Defence Ministry can seek redressal by submitting applications in English. According to a press release, the format of the application is available at banks, treasury and Sainik welfare offices. Applications can be sent to the Adalat Officer, Defence Distribution Officer, No. 99, Dickenson Road, Bangalore 560 042.
Sowing picks up
BANGALORE, JUNE 8. Farmers in the State had, by May 31, taken up sowing on 5.94 lakh hectares as against the target of 69 lakh hectares for the kharif season, accounting for 8.60 per cent coverage, according to the Department of Agriculture. The area coverage by the end of May last year was kharif 1.56 lakh hectares. Normal coverage in May is around 2.65 lakh hectares. The officials said land preparation and sowing of rain-fed kharif crop was in progress wherever adequate rainfall had occurred. Planting of tobacco was in progress in parts of Mysore and Hassan districts. In coastal and Malnad districts, the recent rainfall helped in carrying out pre-sowing operations.
V.S. Malimath to be felicitated
BANGALORE JUNE 8. The former Chief Justice of Kerala High Court, V.S. Malimath, will be felicitated at Ambedkar Bhavan here on June 12 on the occasion of his 75th birthday. C. Somashekara, executive president of Justice Malimath National Felicitation Committee, said here on Tuesday that the former Prime Minister, H. D. Deve Gowda, would inaugurate the function and Ranganath Mishra, former Chief Justice of India, would felicitate Mr. Malimath. Mr. Somashekara said Mr. Malimath, a Kannadiga, had made a significant contribution to the judiciary. A souvenir would be brought on the life and work of Mr. Malimath to mark the occasion. Mr. Malimath was also the Chairman of the Committee on Reforms of the Criminal Justice System. The committee recommended many reforms such as adopting inquisitorial system as against the adversarial system of justice followed presently in India and amendment of Article 498 (A) of Criminal Procedure Code to make it a compoundable offence. Mr. Malimath was the Chairman of Arrears' Committee, formed in 1989, to suggest measures to reduce arrears in courts.
