Thrilling win for Rajasthan boys

CHITTOOR, JUNE 8. Rajasthan boys snatched a solitary point win over Orissa in a Group E match of the Nutrine Maha Lacto 55th junior National basketball championships at the District Sports Authority Stadium, Masonic grounds here on Tuesday.

Having trailed through two quarters, the northern side sank the crucial basket in the dying moments to clinch a nail-biting 61-60 win.

Orissa had played its cards well, its bounce passes bypassing the outstretched arms of the taller Rajasthan defenders. The eastern side's vigil over the defensive rebounds kept it ahead at times by 10 points, through the second and third quarters. When that flagged in the concluding session, its defence was soon in disarray.

Picking the gaps in the corners, the Rajasthan shooters let loose a string of three-pointers that rapidly bridged the gap. Orissa's free throw conversion percentage was abysmal and the laxity with the ricochets off its own backboard proved costly.

The results: Boys: Group A: West Bengal 44 (Chandranath 15) bt Goa 22 (Clynton 10); Punjab 65 (Jagdeep 19, Yadwinder 13, Mandeep 9 ) bt Gujarat 41 (Anderjay 21).

Group C: Chattisgarh 89 (Santosh 14, Kamal 13, S.T. Murli 11, Kiran 10) bt J&K 32 (Varinder 10); AP 67 (Tirupathi 24, Irfan 17) bt UP 38 (Amitesh 13).

Group E: Karnataka 82 (Kaushal 22, Varun 14, Darshan 13, Srinivasa 12) bt Haryana 45 (Surender 18); Rajasthan 61 (Bhupendra 22, Sayad Sadiq 10) bt Orissa 60 (Nigel 19, Satya 12).

Group F: Tamil Nadu 54 (Kannan 23) bt Mizoram 31 (Lalrinkima 9).

Girls: Group A: Chattisgarh 54 (Pushpa 20) bt Delhi 11.

Group C: West Bengal 32 (Poushali 15, Rima 11) bt Gujarat 23, Punjab 53 (Saloni 17, Aashna 9) bt H.P. 21 (Balvinder 11).

F: Karnataka 46 (Sonam 11) bt Pondicherry 22 (Anitha 10).
