Insurance cover: ryots seek fair deal

By Our Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR, JUNE 8. Farmers of mandals which have either not received any crop insurance benefit or received a meagre amount in the district have taken to the roads, protesting against the injustice done to them.

The farmers of Kanaganapalli mandal blocked the busy NH-7 for about three hours forcing the road traffic to come to a standstill. They were demanding insurance benefit for total crop loss as the mandal was announced only 29.5 per cent insurance benefit.

The RDO of Penukonda, B.L. Chennakeshava Rao, who rushed there, explained to farmers that there was nothing the Government could do about it as the insurance benefit was decided by the insurance company on certain guidelines laid down already.

However, their issue was taken to the Government notice and necessary help would be provided, he assured.

It may be mentioned here that the State Government had already assured the farmers that it would give crop loss compensation also to farmers covered under crop insurance scheme but who had received less amount than the compensation announced by the Government. Such farmers would be given the differential amount of the crop loss compensation announced per acre and the actual insurance benefit they had received.

The farmers led by the TDP staged a rasta roko at Nallamada and the ryots led by CPI(M) staged a dharna at O.D.Cheruvu today demanding justice as the two mandals did not receive any insurance benefit. Protest was staged also at Talupula, Amadaguru, Nallamda and O.D.Cheruvu yesterday.
