Will new Govt. give thrust to tourism?

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, JUNE 8. The Karnataka Tourism Policy 2002-07 is said to be one of the most comprehensive documents with regard to the development of tourism in the State. The previous Government headed by S.M. Krishna had given tourism due importance. With a new Government at the helm, a lot more is expected.

Though tourism has been given top priority, programmes are not being implemented properly, say sources in the Tourism Department. New projects are planned every year and a list is prepared of the works to be undertaken. But rarely is this seriously implemented. In addition, what has hampered the development of tourism is the 80-per cent reduction in the subsidies provided to the sector, they say.

However, Dakshina Kannada has seen a lot of development work in the field of tourism. Some major tourism spots that have been developed are Pilikula Nisargadhama, Panambur Beach, and the 1000-pillar Jain basadi at Moodbidri.

At Pilikula Nisargadhama, work on the Heritage Village, taken up at a cost of Rs. 1.75 crore, is nearing completion. Of the amount, Rs. 85 lakh has been released in two instalments.

At Panambur Beach, the Tourism Department intends to erect a high-mast lamp. This Rs. 50-lakh project got under way recently with the release of Rs. 33 lakh.

Another project taken up during the previous year was lighting and illumination work at the Jain basadi, also known as the Tribhuvana Tilaka Choodamani. The Rs. 4.51-lakh project has since been completed.

Apart from this, the State Government also released Rs. 1.69 lakh for publishing a tourist guide for the benefit of tourists visiting the area. The guide was released during the annual Karavali Utsav.
