CHENNAI, JUNE 8. The Metropolitan Transport Corporation will complete the issue of free bus passes to students of schools in the city by July 15, R.Viswanathan, Transport Minister said here today. Inspecting one of the pass issuing centres at Rani Meyyammai Girls Higher Secondary School at Mandaveli, the Minister said that last year it took two months to complete the work. But, this year, with the introduction of the on-line pass issuing system, it will be completed in 45 days. Under the on-line system, the students are photographed using a web camera. Then, their image is captured in the card issued by MTC. The printed pass is laminated and distributed to the students within a few minutes. A total of 60 teams were working in the city to distribute the passes to 2.6 lakh students in 1,800 schools in the city. Each centre issues about 1,500 passes and so far 16,000 students have received their passes for this academic year, Mr Viswanathan said. On-line distribution began on June 1. He wanted to ascertain whether the schools faced any problems with regard to issuing the passes. The Government was spending Rs. 250 crores all over the state. R. Karpoora Sundarapandian, Transport Secretary, said 22 lakh students in the state would receive the passes this year. Last year 17 lakhs students were issued the passes, he said. The Minister inspected two centres - Rani Meyyammai Girls Higher Secondary School and Ramakrishna Mission Higher Secondary School, Burkit Road, T. Nagar. Ct. Meyyappan, Managing Director, MTC, and M. Chandrasekar, General Manager, (Administration), accompanied the Minister during the inspection.
