Partly cloudy

CHENNAI, JUNE 8. The sky will be partly cloudy with showers or thundershowers expected in some areas in the late hours of Wednesday. On Tuesday, Nungambakkam registered a maximum of 37.5 and a minimum of 27.4 degree Celsius, while Meenambakkam recorded a maximum of 35.5 and a minimum of 26.4 degree Celsius. Nungambakkam recorded 1.4 mm of rain and Meenambakkam registered 17 mm. Humidity level at Nungambakkam was 95 per cent and at Meenambakkam it was 92 per cent.

Power cut

Power supply will be suspended on Thursday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. in Nungambakkam, Porur, Egmore and Triplicane due to maintenance work.

Applications

Applications for admission to Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare hostels for Scheduled Caste/Tribe students of schools, colleges, university, industrial training institutes and polytechnics can be obtained from District Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Office at the Chennai Collectorate. Last date for receipt of applications is July 15.

Jewel Expo

A 12-day `Jewel Expo 2004', organised by Poompuhar, will be inaugurated on June 9. Precious, semi-precious stones, beads, silver filigree, costume jewellery, Hyderabad pearls, birthstones, American diamond, gold plated silver jewellery, pendants from Jaipur, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Machulipatnam, Mumbai, will be on display.

Power thefts

The Kancheepuram squad of the Chennai Enforcement Division of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board detected a case of energy theft at Thirupachur, Kancheepuram Electricity distribution circle. A complaint was lodged with Tiruvallur Taluk police station.

Another energy theft was detected during a check by the Chengalpattu squad of the Chennai Enforcement Division, at Singaperumalkoil under Chengalpattu electricity distribution circle. A fine of Rs. 2.06 lakhs was imposed.

Distributed

The Sowbhagya Educational Trust provided books, uniforms and school fee to poor students at a function on Monday. Sarojini Varadappan, social activist, and Dutt N. Kalluri, chief operating officer, Altech Star Solutions, participated.

Awarded

The hi-tech Diagnostic Centre has been awarded ISO 9001:2000 certification. S. Thanikachalam, Vice-Chancellor of Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, presented the certificate to S.P. Ganesan, medical director. H.V. Hande, former Health Minister, participated.

Parayanam

A Vishnu Sahasranamam parayanam was organised by Brahmins Welfare Association at the Parthasarathy Temple, Triplicane, for world peace and rain on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Demonstration

Senior division cadets of 1 Tamil Nadu Naval Unit, National Cadet Corps (NCC) witnessed display of aerobatics, pollution response demonstration and firing operation of a 30-mm machine gun.
