Visakhapatnam
By Our Staff Reporter
VISAKHAPATNAM, JUNE 8. The Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (VMC) will honour the State Government's directions on the Godavari water scheme, the Mayor, Rajana Ramani, said here on Tuesday. This was her reaction when her comment was sought on the Chief Minister's wish that the Godavari water scheme, which is nearing completion, should not be a burden on the residents of Visakhapatnam. Ms. Ramani, who inspected the pumping scheme, being executed by the L&T Company near Rajahmundry, told The Hindu that the VMC had so far not received any directions from the Government. Whatever orders from the Government would be placed before the Corporation Council for discussion, Ms. Ramani said. Since the execution of the project was handed over to the L&T, there was criticism that the company was allowed to be a partner without making a contribution, and also given the task of maintenance for a period of 33 years. During the inspection, a financial wing official of the L&T, Kaushik Paul, said that the company had won a global tender called for in 2001 by the APIIC. It was one of the six bidders, including three from outside India, to clinch the order. The firm was responsible to the Vizag Industrial Water Supply Company (VISCO) which was in charge of the project with the APIIC as the nodal agency. The VMC, VSP and NTPC were the stake holders of the company. VSP and NTPC would be supplied water at the rate of Rs.7.50 a kilolitre and any new organisation seeking water might be charged Rs.25 per kl., according to the Municipal Commissioner, Navin Mittal.
