20 power tillers for grama panchayats

KOCHI, JUNE 8 . The Ernakulam district panchayat will distribute 20 power tillers to 20 grama panchayats as part of the scheme for development of mechanised farming.

The panchayat president, K.B. Muhammedkutti, told reporters at Kakkanad near here today that the tillers would be distributed on June 15.

The power tillers worth Rs. 25 lakhs were purchased from the public sector units, Kerala Agro Machinery Corporation (Kamco), Athani, and the Regional Agro Industrial Development Cooperative (Raidco), Kannur.

The district panchayat was planning major schemes for the development of agricultural sector in the district. As part of the scheme to develop farm mechanisation, threshing machines will be distributed to six selected grama panchayats.

A boat has recently been purchased by the district panchayat from the Kerala Inland Navigation Corporation (KINCO) for better transportation facilities to the Aluva Farm, which is surrounded by water. All the four agricultural farms handed over to the district panchayat including the Aluva and Okkal farms as well as the Coconut nurseries at Neriamangalam and Vyttila, have been computerised for increased efficiency. The production of high quality planting material for new crops like safed musli has already been started during the last financial year.
