Students, schools to be felicitated

KOCHI, JUNE 8 . The Ernakulam district panchayat will felicitate students who have scored high marks in the SSLC examination, from the Government and aided schools in the revenue district and the district panchayat limits. The Government and aided schools in the district panchayat limits, which have produced best results in the SSLC exams will also be felicitated, according to the district panchayat president, K. B. Muhamadkutti.

He told reporters here today that the Education Minister, Nalakath Soopy, would present the awards on June 11 at the panchayat community hall in Thrikkakara.

K. Babu, MLA, will inaugurate the meeting. The district panchayat vice-president, John P. Mani, will distribute the trophies for the best schools.

Rinu Cleetus, Fathima Girls High School, Fort Kochi, who has scored 587 marks and Lini Jose, LMCC High School, Pachalam, who has got 582 marks will be given the gold medal and certificate for the top scorers in the revenue district.

The following students will be given the gold medal and certificates: I - Saranya D. Krishnan, SNDP HS, Udayamperoor (581); II - Nikhil

Mathew John, MSHS, Valakam, Lakshmi Das T. S., HS, Ramamangalam and Adarsh M., SHS, Ayavana (580 marks each); III - Lakshmi, SNDPHS, Udayamperoor (579).

Eleven schools including the Government High School, Kadayiruppu, Government High School, Poothrikka, Model Residential High School, Aluva, St. Joseph GHS, Chengal, HIS HS, Muvattupuzha, St. John's HS, Kaniyattunirappu (Aluva educational district), LF GHS,

Vadakara, St. John HS, Vadakara and St. Joseph's HS, Piravom (Muvattupuzha Educational district), NHS HS, Valayanchirangara and St. Sebastian GHS, Keerampara (Kothamangalam educational district) with 100 percent students passing the SSLC examination will be given trophies. A total of 28 schools with a pass percentage of more than 90 will be given certificate of merit.

Mr. Muhammadkutti said out of eleven `100 percent' schools in the district, three were under the district panchayat. Fifty-five schools out of the 180 in the district panchayat limits have been handed over to the panchayat, with 125 being aided schools.

The district panchayat has spent more than Rs. 1 crore for the construction of new buildings.

An estimated amount of Rs. 1 crore has been earmarked for the construction of laboratories in high schools. About Rs. 40 lakhs has been allocated during the last financial year for the purchase of new furniture and repair of damaged pieces.

The distribution of reference books worth Rs. 25,000 to the high schools will soon be completed. The books have already been purchased.

The district panchayat has earmarked Rs. 5,000 each for all the Government and aided schools for educational equipments and for giving special training to academically backward students. About Rs. 6 lakhs have been earmarked annually for the noon meal scheme in nine high schools in the coastal areas. A grant of Rs. 50,000 for conducting youth festivals and the annual fund for the maintenance of playgrounds in schools are also being allotted.

Developmental activities worth Rs. 1.5 crores under the central Government scheme of the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) was also being conducted through the district panchayat.
