Woman rescued from Kuwaiti employer

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, JUNE 8. A woman from Bangalore, who was reportedly ill-treated by her employer and a job-procuring agent in Kuwait, has returned to the city safely, thanks to the efforts of the Bangalore police.

S. Gayathri, who returned to Bangalore on June 5, is now in her daughter's house in Mahalakshmi Layout, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), Prakash B. Moogi, who was instrumental in her return, told The Hindu on Tuesday. Ms. Gayathri had written to the Karnataka Lokayukta, N. Venkatachala, in May requesting him to save her from the clutches of her employer and a job procuring agent in Kuwait and make arrangements for her return to Bangalore. On Gayathri's complaint, a case was registered at the Seshadripuram police station and the City Crime Branch (CCB) had taken up the investigation under Mr. Moogi's supervision.

As Gayathri had given the address and mobile phone number of Raju, the agent in Kuwait, Mr. Moogi contacted him and asked him to send Ms. Gayathri back immediately. He also briefed the officials of the Indian Embassy in Kuwait. "Subsequently they arranged for Ms. Gayathri's return. We are now on the look out for Syed Yaqoob, the local agent," he said. In her complaint, Ms. Gayathri had said that she had reached Kuwait after paying Rs. 32,000 to Yaqoob of Seshadripuram. She was promised a job in a garment factory in Kuwait with a monthly salary of Rs. 10,000.

However, Raju allegedly sold her to a family for 300 Dinars and forced her to do domestic chores. She was allegedly assaulted, held captive in a room for five days and threatened with dire consequences when she asked Raju to send her to Bangalore. At her employer's house, she was "not given proper food and was forced to work for long hours."
